Project Management Career Case Study – Gaining Experience

Today, I want to share a great story with you about someone I have been working with on their project management career.
They are one of the members of pmStudent e-Learning.
This person reached out to me about two or three weeks ago to let me know that their employer had recently announced they were going to do a project and that there was no project manager. They wanted to know my opinion on a newbie joining a short-term project like this. How would you convince the client that a project manager is needed for this project ?”??? Would you be willing to take on the role?
Absolutely. Go after it! Once you have a clear idea of the scope of the project, you can start to think about how you would manage it.
Do not assume they don’t have a plan. They may have one that you don’t know about. Make sure you don’t talk about your benefits, but theirs when you approach the manager.
Talking to someone about how great it will be for them is not the right approach. If they agree to let you participate in this project, you need to be clear about the benefits to them.
We exchanged information. They spoke to the owner, who informed them that the project was not yet in progress but that another project was being considered. They would keep him in their thoughts. After that, I received an email updating me. This was one of the points that I discussed in my article about how to ask for help without being a pest.
I wrote back to say that although this one didn’t work out, they were thinking of you and that you are interested in this kind of work. You are doing everything right!
A few days ago, another message came from this person. “I’m thrilled to announce that I’ll be meeting management to discuss a new venture!”
This is a great example of how to seek out experience in a new place. It is important to step outside of your comfort zone and be patient. The case study shows that even if the opportunity doesn’t work out, he shouldn’t be discouraged. Keep going! Keep doing the right thing! You can start to move up in the project management ranks by managing smaller projects first, then you can move on to larger projects.

Remote work should not be a privilege

Our Marketing Team went out to eat pizza last week after work. It was a chance for us to relax after a long day and to get to know our new colleague. We also got to show him around the city. After a few drinks, the conversation shifted to casual shop talk and inside jokes. Remote work was also brought up. It was a lively discussion that followed. One voice was against remote work and listed all the potential downsides. I am, and will continue to be, a strong advocate for remote work and will defend it in all circumstances. However, one voice was strongly against it and listed all the possible downsides. Many articles on it point out trust as the main issue and offer advice on how to keep an eye on your employees and ensure they are working. These articles are written by and for managers. I am Dr. Michael St. Pierre and I am the Executive Director of Catholic Campus Ministry Association. I manage seven people in seven states in the U.S. and use ActiveCollab for 100% of our projects, daily work and long-term planning. A team member asked me recently, “What would you do without ActiveCollab?” I knew that I had to share our story.
CCMA is a nonprofit organization that has members across the United States. Their support of college students in a time of increasing complexity and uncertainty is amazing. Our organization offers training programs, networking opportunities, professional development initiatives, and other services to college-level students. We are a non-profit organization and have to coordinate many details and timelines. We have designed our weeks so that we each work at our best and set aside time to chat as a team.

We use the same protocols for mail requests that require a reply. We know that everyone can @name any member of the team so everything is easily found. We encourage asynchronous communication so messages are only answered when each person has time. ActiveCollab houses the agendas as well as follow-up items for team members’ weekly 1×1 meetings. ActiveCollab makes it easy to log in and quickly find what you are looking for. This improves productivity.
ActiveCollab makes us feel at ease, I believe. Each member of the team is aware of what they should be doing on a given day or week. As a nonprofit, the work never ends. Our tools are therefore crucial. Each tool must be simple, reliable, secure, and fun to use. ActiveCollab definitely ticks all of these boxes. Below is a snapshot of ActiveCollab’s June uptime. Unfortunately, we’ve experienced downtime issues that kept us awake at night. We were unable to take immediate action, so a better way to notify the system administrator was used. We are currently restructuring the app to prevent this from happening again. The June uptime was 99,4%. This isn’t good news, but it doesn’t make any of us happy. We’re constantly working to improve this number. Redesigning ActiveCollab

What to do if your app has too many functions
ActiveCollab was redesigning my company a year ago. I was able to work in an environment that allowed for mutual trust, no hierarchy, and was open to all suggestions. ActiveCollab’s market position was solidified by the sale of version 4. It’s hard to create a solid product that solves problems, given the fact that there are only a few first-class software solutions. ActiveCollab’s success was something I saw with great admiration. ActiveCollab’s user experience (UX), was a major concern. A51, the company behind ActiveCollab, was primarily a programming company. The design was an afterthought and was hindering technical implementation. This mindset led to the current state of the application after eight years of work. It needed a fundamental UX redesign.
The first week was spent trying to get a feel for the software and finding key user flows that were causing pain. These are also known as friction points, which are sources of frustration when performing certain tasks. There were many of them. There were many of them. We would sometimes get together to make pancakes, but it was only twice at her house. You had to dig through the paper and recipe notebooks to find a plate when it was time for dinner at her house. The same cupboard also held jam, a drill and a blowdryer. This was a well-organized system that she could navigate without any problems. But for any guest, this was terribly frustrating.ActiveCollab 4 was a house where nothing had been thrown away for eight years. It was robust, feature-rich software that people loved. But only after they mastered how to use it. It was difficult to compete with 20+ similar products. This is due to the fact that most people give up on it after a few minutes. It’s easier to add features to create the illusion that the software is powerful than it is to invest in the product and understand the needs of real users. ActiveCollab became a tool that was used intensively by one set of users, while the rest emitted noise. We were hoping for a significant reduction in this — but not in a manner where you would cut off a patient’s foot to treat a sore toe. We needed to find a balance, rethink our approach to solving problems and come up with a new way to do it. We needed to get rid of everything in our house that was not needed, organize it, find the right place for it, and then buy new stuff.
It was soon apparent to me how complicated ActiveCollab was. The greatest hurdle would be 8 years worth of legacy and the existing users who deserved respect. We are able to overcome this obstacle.

How Symmetric and Asymmetric Encryption Work

Since long before computers, cryptography has been around. For thousands of years, governments and armies have used encryption to protect important messages. Advanced encryption is an essential part of any secure IT infrastructure.
It is a way to send information from one computer system to another but to scramble it so only those who have the proper permission can view it. There are two types: symmetrical and asymmetric encryption.
Let’s look at both types of encryption so you know when to use which one. CompTIA Security+, which is entry-level and vendor neutral, offers a deeper look at encryption.
How does Symmetric Encryption work?
Symmetric means that something is the exact same on both sides. Symmetric keys are used by both the sender as well as the receiver of the message. Symmetric encryption provides participants with a level privacy that is impossible to achieve by simply sending plaintext messages that could be read by anyone.

Start trainingSymmetric encryption uses one key to decrypt and encrypt data. Both the sender and the receiver must have a copy each of the key in order for symmetric encryption to work. There are many ways to share a symmetric key. One method is to use a key agreement protocol.
Diffie-Hellman’s key exchange method was created in 1976. It involves a series data exchanges until an agreed-upon encryption keys is determined. The Elliptic Curve Diffie-Hellman Ephemeral is an improvement to Diffie-Hellman in that it uses complicated elliptical-curve encryption.
Early developers had the option of using symmetric encryption to deliver messages. They could either send a continuous stream or break it up into segments. Two methods were developed to transfer encrypted data.
Stream cipher can be used for symmetric encryption to send one bit at a given time. However, it isn’t as often used these days. Block ciphers allow data to be encrypted and sent in small sections (64 bits, 128 bits or 256 bits). Block ciphers include DES and Triple DES as well as RC5, RC5, AES, and RC5.
Stream cipher. A stream cipher can be useful when data transmissions are not expected to last for long. RC4, for instance, is a stream cipher which generates a stream (one bit at a moment) of bits that combines encryption and plaintext messages. It was used in wireless LAN (WLAN) early wireless security technologies. Although RC4 is fast and simple, it is not considered to be as secure as other wireless security technologies.
Block cipher. Block cipher is a method of dividing the information into blocks with a predetermined length. It was first used in the Digital Encryption Standard algorithm (DES) in the 1990s. It was initially widely used. Its 56-bit key length led to people questioning whether they could trust it.
Private key encryption is another name for symmetric encryption. Although it is simpler than asymmetric encryption, it does have its limitations. The main problem is getting the key to the person you are sharing data with.
It is difficult to send a private key via the internet. What happens if someone else possesses it? There’s a better way.
How does Asymmetric Encryption work?
Although they are distinct, asymmetric keys can be used together. However, the keys are not treated in the same way. The website that grants access creates both a private and public key. They keep the private key and then send the public key to potential users. A user can use the public key to send an encrypted message from one website to another.
The message is sent in plain text when the sender typed it. The message is encrypted before it hits the public internet. The private key associated with the message can be used by the receiver to decipher it back into plain text.
